The new Refrigeration Operator for Recreation Facilities course (formerly known as Arena /Curling Rink Operator Course) has been approved. For the last seven years, Recreation and Regional Services has contracted Recreation Connections Manitoba to coordinate and administer this course and we will continue to do so for the new Refrigeration Operator for Recreation Facilities courses.
While the approval process has taken longer than anticipated we are confident the new course material will better prepare students to successfully pass the Province of Manitoba Power Engineer Refrigeration Class exam. The course has undergone significant changes to reflect the current provincial exam and what is happening at the national level.
The course now follows the SOPEEC (The Standardization of Power Engineer Examinations Committee) Syllabus so chapters on welding, air conditioning and electricity have been added. The attached course syllabus provides more detail on the new course material.
The course manual we will be using is the PanGlobal Power Engineering- Refrigeration Plant Operator textbooks. Not only will these textbooks be used during both Level I and Level II but they will be a good resource for both facilities and facility operators. Textbooks are now available for purchase through PanGlobal or Recreation Connections Manitoba.
Although students will continue to receive 900 credit hours towards the 1,800 hours required to write the provincial exam, when they pass both Levels I & II, they will no longer be issued “endorsed certificates” at the end of Level I.
The course tests/final exams have changed to better prepare students to write the provincial exam. Administration of the Province of Manitoba Power Engineer Refrigeration Class exam is the responsibility of the Office of the Fire Commissioner, Inspection and Technical Services Branch. Additional information regarding the provincial examination process is available online. All inquiries regarding the provincial exam should be forwarded to Inspection and Technical Services Manitoba.
In addition to the PanGlobal textbooks, the following items will be referenced throughout the course:
The new course will require a copy of PanGlobal textbooks – Refrigeration Plant Operator (Book 1 & 2) and an Academic Supplement as well as a course manual. Regional and Recreation Services will ensure that each person attending the course has access to a set of textbooks they can use while taking the course. These books must be returned to the instructor at the end of the week. The cost to purchase all the books are dependent on what the current price set by Pan Global. If you wish to purchase textbooks to review prior to the beginning of the course you can do so online by visiting the Pan Global website.
